Financial Insights Report – Getting Started

Companies use OPEXEngine’s Financial Insights Reports to compare their performance to peer groups, competitors, leadership companies and to industry comparables.  You can track many companies or an industry group for one time period, or you can track the results of a particular company or several companies over time.

Companies can compare their own financial performance and operating statistics with industry peer groups as a whole with the Peer Builder tool, or with specific companies and specific time periods with the Create Reports tool. Spotting significant differences between your own company’s performance and the industry figures can be the first step toward better understanding, identifying areas which need improvement and ultimately improving performance.

Getting Started with Create Reports and Peer Builder

Create Reports

In the Tab, Create Report, you can select any number of individual companies you choose.  You may select the same time period for each company, or different ones. You may want to set up a trend report for one company and see how their results changed over time and as the company grew by selecting the company and a different time period.

Step 1 – Choosing a Report.

There are several Insights Reports to choose:

1)The Financial Insight Report provides the most overall performance data in a number of areas, including the Valuation Comparison, the Revenue Comparison, Cost and Expense Comparisons, Employee Productivity Comparisons, Profitability Analysis Comparisons, Working Capital Comparisons, and Cash Flow and Balance Sheet Comparisons;

2)The G&A Insights Report with a special focus on G&A expense and productivity;

3)The R&D Insights Report with a special focus on R&D expense and productivity;

4)The S&M Insights Report with a special focus on Sales and Marketing expense and revenue and valuation results.

Step 2 – Select Fiscal Year, Time Period and Company.

Reports are formatted by selecting data sets defined by a fiscal year, a time period and a company. In Create Report, reports can be comprised of a mix of companies and time periods, or you can compare the same company over many time periods. Company data is retrieved by company name or stock ticker. A stock ticker look-up box will appear when you start to type in a company’s symbol to ensure that you enter the right symbol.

Click Add Ticker when you confirmed each choice in order to include a specific company in the Report. In order to see a company’s fiscal year on a calendar basis, you can check the calendar start and end date for each company’s fiscal year by clicking the FY Start and End Date button. If you want to change the fiscal year or time period for a company, delete the entire ticker symbol and choose the company again with the desired FY.

In addition, in order to ensure that there is data available for each stock ticker and time period chosen, you may click on the Data Verification button to the right of each company on your list. We will run a quick query into the Financial Insights Reports database to verify that the data that you have chosen is available. A company may not have filed its results with the SEC for that time period, so it is useful to check before finalizing your report.

Peer Builder

In the Tab, Peer Builder, you may create a report industry peer groups covering as many companies as you would like.  Selections of more than 10 companies at a time may take a slightly longer time to build as the data is being pulled in real time each time you create a report.

You can select an industry, and then apply filters of revenue, revenue growth, and operating margin to narrow your peer group and make it more comparable to your own company. You can also add specific companies to the peer group, and delete any that you do not want to include.

Step 1 – Choosing a Report.

There are several Insights Reports to choose:

3)The R&D Insights Report with a special focus on R&D expense and productivity;

4)The S&M Insights Report with a special focus on Sales and Marketing expense and revenue and valuation results.

Step 2 – Select Fiscal Year, Time Period and Company.

In Peer Builder, reports are comprised of the time period selected under the Fiscal Year and Time Period boxes. The report data is then retrieved by the total number of companies selected. You also have the option to add companies to the peer group via a stock ticker look-up box which will appear when you start to type in a company’s symbol to ensure that you enter the right symbol. Click the Add button in the selection area and the company will be included in the peer group. You may also delete companies from the peer group.

In order for an apples-to-apples comparison to a particular point in time for your customizable peer group, there is only one option to select one Fiscal Year and Time Period option for each peer group build.  If data for a particular company within your customized peer group is not available they will display NA once the report is run.  A company may not have filed its results with the SEC for that time period but the opportunity to come back to your saved peer group will allow to see when data has been made available for your customized peer group.

My Reports

When you have completed the set up of a report, you will be re-directed to the My Reports tab. There you will be able to access all of your reports, ready to open or download by clicking on the Excel link. You will be prompted to Open/Save your report based on the settings in your web browser. Your reports will remain in My Reports and are generated in real time each time you open or download the report. Therefore, if a company re-states its earnings or changes something with its filing, you will get the most up-to-date information available each time you open or download a report.
